Heather Murphy // The Trending Project
The Trending Project is a series of videos that utilize media clips that were trending during specific weeks of time online. The project focuses on how we watch and read about wildly different trending subjects – from a cat to a military coup – all within the same week, and in the same digital space. Video, audio, and other online ephemera are layered on top of one another, remixed and mashed together to de-naturalize our experience of trends. This collapse of time and space blurs the lines between entertainment, dramatization, advertising, and journalism. These videos are then wirelessly transmitted from a hacked router to viewers’ mobile devices, where (once they connect), they are continuously redirected to watch this video archive of trends.
